Als Senait zum ersten Mal geboren wurde, herrschte Bürgerkrieg, und ihr Vater, der vor den Häschern der äthiopischen Armee fliehen musste, ließ seine Familie im Stich. Ihre Mutter, allein und verzweifelt, setzte das wenige Wochen alte Kind in einem Koffer aus. Eine Nachbarin entdeckte das Baby und rettete es. Da erblickte Senait zum zweiten Mal das Licht der Welt - und verlor ihre Mutter, die zur Strafe für ihre Tat zu sechs Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt wurde.
Senait wuchs im Waisenhaus heran. Im Alter von fünf Jahren kam sie in das Lager einer eritreischen Guerillaorganisation, wo sie und andere Kinder als Soldaten ausgebildet und zum Töten gedrillt wurden. Nach Jahren voller Qualen und Entbehrungen verhalf ihr ein Verwandter zur Flucht in den Sudan. Aber damit war ihre Odyssee noch nicht beendet. Es sollte noch viele Jahre dauern, bis sie endlich ihrem Vater nach Deutschland folgen konnte.
In eindringlichen Worten erzählt Senait ihr Leben - die erschütternde Geschichte eines afrikanischen Albtraums. 
»Jetzt, nachdem ich all das niedergeschrieben habe, bin ich frei. Dieses Buch wird meinem Leben Frieden bringen. Die Geschichte, die ich zu erzählen habe, ist hart. Senait Mehari werd geboren in Asmara, de huidige hoofdstad van Eritrea. Haar moeder staat er na Senaits geboorte alleen voor, en in haar wanhoop legt ze haar kind in een koffer onder het bed en verlaat het huis. De buurvrouw, gealarmeerd door het babygehuil, gaat naar Senait op zoek en vindt haar uiteindelijk. Ze wordt naar het staatsweeshuis gebracht, omdat haar moeder tot zes jaar celstraf wordt veroordeeld. Senait groeit op in het troosteloze kindertehuis, totdat een familielid haar na vijf jaar komt halen. Even lijkt het erop dat Senait een normaal leven kan leiden, tot ze door haar tante naar haar vader wordt gebracht. Ze komt bij hem en zijn derde vrouw in huis. Senait wordt door hem mishandeld, en als ze zes is brengt hij haar en haar twee halfzusjes naar het leger. Hier wordt Senait getraind tot kindsoldaat. en drie lange jaren van honger, ziektes, aframmelingen en onderdanigheid volgen. Weer wordt Senait gered, maar haar vader eist dat zij bij hem in Duitsland komt wonen. Pas op haar vijftiende weet zij te vluchten.

Strijden voor mijn land is het bewonderenswaardige verslag van Senaits jeugd in Eritrea en haar jaren in het rebellenleger. Het is een roep om aandacht voor de problematiek rond kindsoldaten, een onderwerp dat Senait samen met Unicef en Terre des Hommes op de politieke agenda’s probeert te krijgen.

»Nu ik alles heb opgeschreven ben ik vrij.
Dit boek zal rust brengen in mijn leven.
Het verhaal dat ik te vertellen heb is hard, maar ik wil niet dat de lezers van mijn boek alleen de nare dingen zien.

Het Koffieritueel

Eritrea is een land in opbouw. Na dertig jaar oorlog en enkele grensconflicten met buurland Ethiopië is er nu relatieve rust. De hoofdpersoon gaat in Eritrea op zoek naar de sporen van zijn omgekomen vader. In de nadagen van de oorlog is hij in Eritrea overleden. Zoveel is zeker, verder ontbreekt elk spoor. Met de hulp van Haile, een Eritreër, wordt een zoektocht gestart.

 Gaandeweg ontdekt Wim, de hoofdpersoon, het land met zijn vriendelijke mensen en boeiende gewoontes. Daarbij komen de vragen naar zijn vader steeds meer op de achtergrond en ontdekt hij een land dat hem boeit en aangrijpt.

'Het Koffieritueel' is meer dan een roman die zich afspeelt in de Hoorn van Afrika. Het is een mix van persoonlijke ervaringen en fictie, vermengd met verhalen uit de bewogen geschiedenis van Eritrea. 'Het Koffieritueel' gunt de lezer een kijkje in het alledaagse leven van mensen in een sociale context die westerse mensen doorgaans niet kennen.

Wim Drost (1954) is via een vriendin - een vluchteling - in contact gekomen met Eritrea. In 2001 heeft hij het land bezocht. Die ervaring vormt de basis voor 'Het Koffieritueel' .Wim Drost heeft verscheidene publicaties op zijn naam staan. De laatste jaren heeft hij vooral gepubliceerd over het educatieve uitgeversbedrijf. 'Het Koffieritueel' is zijn debuutroman.
